Chapter Nine

Tina met the nursing administrator on a Tuesday to discuss her work schedule. She liked the woman and liked the way the emergency room trauma unit was set up. She felt like she would enjoy working there.

Unfortunately, the accommodations weren’t what she wanted. They happened to be small apartments outside of the hospital, and were noisy with window air conditioners. She could get the company to spring for a nicer apartment in a quieter area, but decided that she would stay with Cole and Zack, at least for the present time.

When they got home from their first day on their new job, they were nasty and tired. She took it on herself to cook the evening meal for them. She didn’t start her rotation until Thursday night.

They ate and the men talked about the job they were working on. She found out it was an office complex and would be built from the ground up .They asked her about her job.

“I’m going to like it. It’s just what I enjoy, trauma with state-of-the-art equipment.”

“Sounds good. I’m glad you’re going to be working somewhere you will enjoy,” Cole said.

“What did you decide on staying with us?” Zack asked in a cautious voice.

“If you’re sure you don’t mind me staying, I’d like to.”

“Of course we want you to stay.” Cole reached over and grabbed her hand to squeeze it.

“Do you mind if I have my things shipped here then?”

“Not at all. You’ll need your things around you to feel comfortable. Plus, you’ll need your uniforms. How soon will they get here? Didn’t you say you have to start work Thursday night?” Cole asked.

“If they aren’t here by Wednesday, I’ll go out and buy a couple of scrubs. It’s no big deal.”

“I hate that you didn’t already ship them when you first got here,” Zack told her.

“Well, twenty-twenty and all that.” Tina smiled and picked up her plate to take it to the sink.

Zack stopped her. “You cooked, we wash dishes.”

Cole picked up his own plate and carried it over to the sink.

“We love it when you cook. You clean up as you go.” Zack grinned at her. “Doesn’t leave much for us to worry with.”

Tina laughed and left them to it to turn on the TV and watch the news. The announcer discussed the latest traffic accidents and local incidents, then continued with the national. Lastly, he touched on the fact that the Truck Stop Killer was still at large though he hadn’t taken another victim.

“Why are you watching that?” Cole asked, changing the channel to Wheel of Fortune.

“I wanted to know if they had caught him yet.” She stood up to look him in the eyes.

Tina knew he didn’t want her obsessing over the incident. Watching the news to find out if they’d caught him or not, bothered him. Well, she couldn’t help it. She needed to know. She wouldn’t feel truly safe enough to ride alone until he was in prison.

“Back off, Cole,” she warned him.

“I can’t help not wanting you to have to think about it.
